Students at Career Tech High School are required to earn 1 (one) full credit of global studies in order to graduate.  There are several ways to satisfy the global studies requirement.  The basic intent of the class is that the student will have an educational experience that exposes them to cultures and history from around the world.  This allows the student to place themselves, as American citizens, in a larger and more comprehensive world context.

Students must earn four quarter credits, or complete four discrete units of study.  The student has the choice regarding how to satisfy the requirement, but they must consult with the teacher to get approval before beginning any course of study.

Course Options – students choose from this list cafeteria style:

Description

Credit value

Plato Geography – complete Plato courseware plus two short essays.

.25 credit

World Geography: Glencoe – Choose two units of your choice to equal a .25 credit.  The book is divided into 11 units. Students must start with Unit 1 “World” before going on to any other unit.   Answer all Section Assessment questions in each Chapter.  Complete Chapter Assessment parts 1. Reviewing Key Terms 2. Reviewing Facts and 3.Standardized Test Practice.

.25 credits per 2 units in text book

Independent research project and product: Students may select an area of study to thoroughly research.  The student then produces a project, either a research report or a multi-media presentation that details the material studied.  Research projects will be held to the same standards as the research reports in Comm. II

.25 credits per research project

It goes without saying that the studies and projects should not overlap.  For instance, if a student earns credit in the Global Studies text reading about Africa, they will not get credit for writing a research report on Africa as well. Also you may not repeat Units and you must begin with Unit 1.

After you have completed Unit one you many choose any other unit to satisfy the requirements. You many not repeat any Units.

All papers will be handed back that are not labeled with the Unit, the chapter and the section. Included in your titles will be “Checking for understanding” “Critical Thinking”, “Analyzing Maps”, “Applying Geography”, “Reviewing Key Terms”, “Reviewing Facts”, and “Standardized Test Practice” If you have any questions see the instructor before you begin.
